Quote Checklist

Two junk removal quotes for the same garage cleanout can look very different on paper. One may be a single number, another a list of line items, and a third a range with several conditions attached. Comparing them fairly takes a little structure. This checklist covers what to gather before you ask, what each quote should spell out, and the warning signs worth noticing.
Before You Ask for Quotes
A quote is only as good as the description behind it. A few minutes of preparation means every provider is pricing the same job.
- Take photos of everything that is going, including the back of the room, the far corner of the garage or the inside of the shed.
- Note the access: stairs, narrow doorways, a long carry from the door to the curb, a gate code or a neighborhood rule about parking a truck.
- Flag unusual items: mattresses, appliances, electronics, paint, tires or anything heavy or awkward.
- Decide what stays so nobody has to guess on the day.
What a Clear Quote Should Spell Out
When the quotes arrive, check whether each one answers the same questions:
- Does the amount include labor, hauling and disposal, or is any of that extra?
- Is the amount figured by volume, by item or by time?
- Is the number firm, or an estimate that can change once the crew sees the pile?
- Which items cost extra or are not accepted at all?
- Is carrying items out from inside the home included?
Compare Like With Like
A lower number is not always the lower cost. If one quote leaves out disposal and charges extra for stairs, while another includes both, they are not the same offer. Line the quotes up side by side and mark any item that appears in one but not in the others. Ask each provider to confirm the gaps in writing, even if that is just a text message or email.
Red Flags Worth Noticing
- A firm number given with no description of the job at all
- Pressure to decide on the spot
- Vague answers about where the items end up
- A request for full payment before any work starts
- No clear answer on what happens if the load turns out bigger than expected
Questions to Ask Before You Say Yes
- Will you be told before the total changes?
- How are paint, batteries, electronics and appliances handled?
- Can the pickup be scheduled around your availability?
- Will the area be swept or left as found?
